The Sandwell Trading Standards Responsible Business Scheme

Empowering retailers to prevent underage sales

Welcome to the Sandwell Trading Standards Responsible Business Scheme, the first of its kind in the country. The scheme’s aim is to empower retailers and their staff to prevent underage sales.

We recognise that you want to comply with the law in order to trade fairly and successfully and at the same time, make a positive contribution to your local community.

By being part of the scheme, Sandwell Trading Standards will provide accredited training for you and all your staff who are involved in the sale of age restricted products. Please ensure all people involved in serving age restricted products are competent by undertaking and passing the accredited course. Once passed, they will be issued with a pass certificate which you can display with pride on the business premises.

In addition Sandwell Trading Standards will devise a due diligence system to help you prevent underage sales and therefore reduce the risk of enforcement action against you and your business.

There are also two short films available to you for use in training your staff.  They are based on true life stories which have been produced by Sandwell Trading Standards.  They are hard hitting films, talking about the potential harms of underage drinking and smoking.  They also provide examples of businesses which failed test purchasing and were subsequently prosecuted and the impact this had on the business.  The two films are available online via the following links (these links will need to be embedded):
